Which licence for which e-scooter?

The short answer: a normal car licence covers every 45 km/h scooter. For anything faster there are clear paths — here is the overview.

Vmoto CITI 74V — 45 km/h electric scooter for licence class AM/B

45 km/h: class AM — included in your car licence.

Scooters up to 45 km/h (vehicle class L1e, electric up to 4 kW continuous power) fall under licence class AM. AM is automatically included in class B — and in A1, A2 and A. If you hold a car licence, you just get on and ride.

Without a car licence, a standalone AM licence is available from age 15.

80 km/h and faster: A1, A2 or A.

Above 45 km/h you enter vehicle class L3e — motorcycle licence classes apply. Which one you need depends on motor power: A1 (from age 16) covers light motorcycles up to 11 kW, A2 (from 18) up to 35 kW, the open class A everything beyond.

For most e-scooters and e-motorcycles in this class, A1 or A2 is enough — we'll tell you exactly which class applies to your model.

B196: the path for car drivers.

You hold class B but no motorcycle licence? With the B196 extension you may ride light motorcycles up to 11 kW — no exam required. Requirements: at least 25 years old, class B for at least five years, and 13.5 hours of training (theory + practice).

Important: B196 is valid only within Germany.

Plates, insurance, inspection.

45 km/h vehicles (L1e) are wonderfully simple: attach an insurance plate and ride — no registration, no periodic inspection.

L3e vehicles are registered normally: official plate plus periodic inspection (HU). Still very manageable — we're happy to walk you through the details.

Not legal advice: the German FeV and StVZO govern each individual case. We'll advise you in person on your specific model.
