A 45 km/h scooter: which licence do you need?

The short answer is in the first box. The rest of this page translates speed into licence class: one table, eight questions people really ask in the shop, and the models your class already covers. Everything in depth lives on the linked pages — it is not repeated here.

The short answer

Up to 45 km/h: class AM

Class AM is already inside every category B car licence — and inside A1, A2 and A. If you may drive a car, you may ride: no test, no course, no waiting time.

80 to 125 km/h: A1 or code 196

Above that the 125 class begins. Either you hold the A1 motorcycle licence — or, as a car driver, you have code 196 added: theory and practice at a driving school, no exam.

Your speed, your class.

One row per vehicle class we sell. What we do not stock is stated under the table.

Swipe the table sideways for age and number plate.

Below 45 km/h the moped class starts at 25 km/h. We do not stock it — every vehicle we sell does 45 km/h or more. Which class applies to the model you want is stated in its papers, and we go through them with you before you buy.

Frequent questions

Eight questions, eight short answers.

Which licence do I need for a 45 km/h scooter?

Class AM. You do not have to take it separately if you hold a car licence: category B includes AM, and so do A1, A2 and A.

What exactly is class AM?

It covers mopeds up to 45 km/h: up to 50 cc for a combustion engine, up to 4 kW rated power for an electric one. Exactly the class our 45s sit in.

A moped licence at 16 — is that possible here?

In Baden-Württemberg, yes: the minimum age for class AM is 16 here. Baden-Württemberg never adopted the option of allowing AM from 15. In Hesse — just across the state border — it is 15.

What applies in your case is confirmed bindingly by your driving school or the licensing office.

Code 196 — what may I ride with it?

The same vehicles as class A1: light motorcycles up to 125 cc, at most 11 kW rated power and at most 0.1 kW per kilogram. Code 196 is valid in Germany only.

Requirements: at least 25 years old and holding category B for at least five years. There is no exam.

Can I ride a 125 on a car licence?

Not on category B alone — but with code 196 you can. You take theory and practice lessons at a driving school and have the code entered, without an exam.

Does a 45 km/h scooter need registration, an inspection or road tax?

No. The 45 km/h class only needs an insurance plate, renewed every year: no registration, no periodic technical inspection, no road tax.

From the 125 class on it is different — those vehicles are registered and carry a normal number plate.

What does the code 196 course cost?

Every driving school sets that itself — it depends on the provider. We have put the range and the process on our code 196 page; the binding figure is always your driving school's quote.

Which scooters can I ride on my car licence right away?

Every 45 km/h model in our shop. They are listed right under this question — with speed and price, each row leading to the model.
